"Never discourage anyone...who continually
makes progress, no matter how slow." PLATO
Friends
of EdenDust
"God
has given gifts to each of you from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Manage them well so that God's generousity can flow through you. Are you called to be a speaker? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you.
Are you called to help others?
Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies.
Then God will be given glory
in everything through Jesus Christ. All Glory and Power belong to Him forever and ever. Amen."
I Peter 4: 10-11

SHIRLEY HORN: I LOVE YOU, Paris
1934 - 2005
A Solemn Salute to a Beautiful Lady and Friend. National Public Radio Says Good-Bye - "Click to Listen"
I'm one of the fortunate that really got to know Ms. Horn for a season.
She
was wickedly funny and seriously all about 'the music'. I will forever cherish her 'deposits' into my soul. I am forever changed
for knowing her and having her treat me as a 'son' for that brief period in time.
If you know Shirley's music, you
will recognize the subject of the post as a title to one of her best recordings. It's a special part of our journey, together,
and one of my fondest memories how such a simple title (our idea, together) could cause such a ruckus inside her label. Thank
you for that 'honor', and for allowing me to sequence the songs on "Light Out of Darkness" and co-writing with you on "Loving
You".
'We were really special, together , weren't we Shirley ?!!'
Rest, Now. Your work is done.
I
will honor your memory, with dignity.

LUTHER VANDROSS
1951 - 2005
Sometimes I think about the talented voices that
are no longer with us. Most recently Ron Winans left us with a void. Karen Carpenter, Donny
Hathaway, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding ...all left us
too soon. And now, Luther Vandross has to be added to that achingly sad list.
"I want the night to stay.., and last a little
longer.
So we can always be, in love you see..."
Luther would sing a lyric like no other man before
or since. He phrased much like a female vocalist, with a knowing nod toward those that he so admired such as Aretha
Franklin and Dionne Warwick. He would go on to produce those legendary voices and write specifically
for them as only he could. His genius at background vocals allow him to hear and feel arrangements that sound 'fresh' in every
listen. His productions were always above the standards that so many except as finished these days and his stage
shows were classy and entertaining without ever relying on pyro-technics for emphasis. With Luther, the music was always the
madame of the ball.
He will be heralded by many and missed
by all. His voice was one of those that truly come along once in a lifetime. Thank God he was selfless and recorded so much
for us to hear in the years to come. I pray that he's found peace and that he's dancing with his father.., again.

RONALD WINANS
1956 - 2005
It's a little difficult to write about Ronald
Winans' passing on for several reasons. First, it's just a little weird observing the death of someone my own age.
He died of heart failure on the 17th of June, after a miraculous recovery from a massive attack back in 1997. His complete
family was again at his bedside as he crossed over.
I can remember when I first heard Ronald sing with
his brothers, The Winans, back in 1980 on the tune, ' The Question Is '. Discovered by fellow
Detroit singer Howard Smith and later introduced to Andrae Crouch, this group would
go on to revolutionize Gospel quartet singing as they brought a contemporary edge to everything they touched, sometimes to
the dismay of staunch church members. Their beats and grooves would eventually garner them five grammys, many for Quincy
Jones' Qwest Label where they would go on to sing with many other artists like Michael Jackson,
Anita Baker and Michael McDonald.
Ronald was second oldest in the most
incredibly talented family to come along since The Jacksons. His siblings left to carry on the legacy include
BeBe and CeCe Winans, first a duo and now solo artists. Angie and Debbie
Winans, twins Marvin and Carvin Winans, Michael Winans, Daniel
Winans and his nephews, Winans Phase 2.
Rest in PEACE, Ronald.

PHYLLIS HYMAN: In
Between the Heartaches

I must admit to being a little bias to Ms. Hyman's
craft, having toured as a background vocalist briefly with her in the early 90's. But, even before I was employed by her,
I was in love with her voice. THAT VOICE is captured beautifully on this Import compilation of some of Phyllis' most precious
jazz renditions. You'll be amazed to discover that she never considered herself a jazz vocalist.., and wonder how these recordings
have remained so undiscovered, especially after her untimely suicide in '95. But that has always been the part of the mystery
and allure that surrounds Phyllis; how one so talented could be so under appreciated for her unique contributions to the craft
of singing.
The McCoy Tyner pieces
are particular gems as is the title Burt Bacharach - Hall David penned tune. You can't go
wrong with anything sung by Phyllis, so do pick up any of her releases if you've never heard of this voice or this lady. However,
if you've a fan, then this release is a MUST HAVE for your collection. This is a masters class for all those would be song
stylists. Listen in amazement at the wonderful skill and class that was the Phyllis Hyman signature. ~~BD
